How to Convert HEIC to JPEG Without Unnecessary Quality Loss
A practical guide to choosing JPEG quality, preserving dimensions, and checking the result after HEIC conversion.
What happens during conversion
A HEIC-to-JPEG converter first decodes the HEIC image into pixels and then encodes those pixels as JPEG. JPEG is a lossy format, so some data is simplified to produce a smaller, widely compatible file.
A high quality setting minimizes visible change for ordinary photos, but conversion cannot restore detail that was not present in the source. It can also change how metadata, wide color, HDR information, or additional images in a HEIF container are represented.
Recommended settings
- Use the original HEIC instead of a screenshot or a copy sent through a messaging app.
- Keep original dimensions unless you have a specific pixel-size or upload requirement.
- Start around 90–95% JPEG quality for a high-quality general-purpose result.
- Keep the aspect ratio locked when resizing to avoid stretching the photo.
- Inspect fine detail, orientation, and color before deleting or moving the source file.
Why JPEG is useful
JPEG works in virtually every browser, document tool, upload form, and photo editor. It is usually much smaller than a lossless PNG for the same camera photo, which makes it a practical choice for email, forms, websites, and shared folders.
Keep the HEIC when storage efficiency, original metadata, or Apple editing information matters. Treat the JPEG as a compatible delivery copy rather than a replacement for the original.
