Why choose HEICtoJPEG.io?

Many online HEIC-to-JPEG converters upload your photos to a remote server for processing. HEICtoJPEG.io converts them locally in your browser instead.

  • Never uploaded

Your photos are never sent, stored, or seen by anyone but you.

  • High-quality output

JPEG output uses high-quality compression for clear photos and practical file sizes.

  • EXIF removed

GPS location, date taken, and camera details are not copied to the JPEG.

  • Up to 10 files

Convert a batch and download ready images individually or together in a ZIP file.

  • No sign-up

No account, no email capture, no watermark, and no repeat-use limit.

  • Every device

Windows, Mac, Linux, and mobile. No installation.

Why JPEG instead of PNG

JPEG is a lossy format, but at a high quality setting — which this tool uses by default — the difference is invisible to the eye in an ordinary photo. What you get in exchange is a much smaller file that opens everywhere: every OS, every app, every upload form that flatly rejects HEIC.

PNG is the better choice when you need pixel-perfect lossless output or a transparent background — screenshots, logos, graphics you'll edit further. For a straight photo you're sharing, printing, or uploading somewhere, JPEG's smaller size and universal support usually wins.

If file size and compatibility are the priority, convert to JPEG. If pixel-for-pixel accuracy or transparency matters more, use our HEIC to PNG converter instead — same local, no-upload approach, different output format.

HEIC vs JPEG, explained

HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container) is Apple's default photo format since iOS 11. It uses a newer, more efficient compression method than JPEG, so it stores a similar-looking photo in roughly half the file size. The trade-off is compatibility: HEIC is still not fully supported across Windows, many web upload forms, and a lot of non-Apple software, which is why converting to JPEG remains the practical default when you need to share, print, or upload a photo somewhere outside Apple's ecosystem.

JPEG, in exchange for the larger file size, is understood by essentially every device, platform, and piece of software made in the last 25 years. That universal support is the entire reason it's still the default target format for HEIC conversion, even though newer formats like HEIC and WebP are technically more efficient.

Privacy by Design

Most online HEIC to JPEG converters route your files through a remote server to process the conversion. That means your photos, even briefly, exist on infrastructure you do not control.

HEICtoJPEG.io runs the entire conversion client-side. Your files are read, converted, and downloaded without ever being transmitted anywhere. There is no upload step to intercept and no server-side copy to delete, because none is ever created.

This matters most for family photos, medical images, ID scans, or any file you would rather not put through a third-party server.

HEIC to JPEG conversion for everyone

Use a broadly supported JPEG when the original iPhone or HEIF photo does not fit the next step in your workflow.

  • Windows users

Photos sent from an iPhone show up as unreadable HEIC files. Convert them to JPEG and they open in any Windows photo viewer.

  • Social media & email

Most platforms and email clients still don't render HEIC properly. Convert first and avoid the broken-image icon.

  • Anyone filling out a form

Application portals, job sites, and government forms routinely reject HEIC uploads outright. JPEG is accepted almost everywhere.

  • Photo libraries on the go

Convert a batch from a recent trip or event so the files play nicely with older apps, printers, and shared drives.

How to stop your iPhone from saving photos as HEIC

If you'd rather your iPhone save new photos directly as JPEG, go to Settings → Camera → Formats and select Most Compatible instead of High Efficiency. This changes what your camera saves going forward; it doesn't affect photos you've already taken, which is where a converter like this one still comes in.

Questions People Actually Ask

Clear answers about quality, privacy, compatibility, and iPhone photos.

What is heictojpeg.io?

heictojpeg.io is a free online tool that converts HEIC/HEIF image files, the format used by iPhones, into JPEG format quickly and directly in your browser.

Is heictojpeg.io really free?

Yes. There are no hidden fees, watermarks, or sign-up requirements. Convert as many batches of files as you need, whenever you need to.

Do I need to create an account?

No. heictojpeg.io works with zero sign-up. Just open the site and start converting.

Does converting HEIC to JPEG upload my photos to a server?

No. This tool uses your browser's built-in processing to convert the file locally on your device. The image data never leaves your computer or phone, so there's nothing to intercept and nothing stored on a remote server.

Does converting HEIC to JPEG remove the photo's date and location data?

Yes. The converter creates a new JPEG and does not copy EXIF metadata such as the date taken, GPS location, or camera information from the source photo.

Is JPEG conversion really lossless?

No, and any tool claiming zero quality loss when converting to JPEG isn't being accurate. JPEG uses lossy compression by design. At a high quality setting, the difference is invisible to the eye in ordinary photos, but it is technically not identical to the original.

How many files can I convert at once?

You can batch convert up to 10 files per session, with a maximum file size of 50 MB per file.

Does heictojpeg.io work on Windows?

Yes. Since it runs entirely in your browser, heictojpeg.io works on Windows, Mac, Linux, Chromebook, and mobile devices, with no software installation required.
