HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container) is Apple's default photo format since iOS 11. It uses a newer, more efficient compression method than JPEG, so it stores a similar-looking photo in roughly half the file size. The trade-off is compatibility: HEIC is still not fully supported across Windows, many web upload forms, and a lot of non-Apple software, which is why converting to JPEG remains the practical default when you need to share, print, or upload a photo somewhere outside Apple's ecosystem.
JPEG, in exchange for the larger file size, is understood by essentially every device, platform, and piece of software made in the last 25 years.
