JPEG is a lossy format, but at a high quality setting — which this tool uses by default — the difference is invisible to the eye in an ordinary photo. What you get in exchange is a much smaller file that opens everywhere: every OS, every app, every upload form that flatly rejects HEIC.
PNG is the better choice when you need pixel-perfect lossless output or a transparent background — screenshots, logos, graphics you'll edit further. For a straight photo you're sharing, printing, or uploading somewhere, JPEG's smaller size and universal support usually wins.

HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container) is Apple's default photo format since iOS 11. It uses a newer, more efficient compression method than JPEG, so it stores a similar-looking photo in roughly half the file size. The trade-off is compatibility: HEIC is still not fully supported across Windows, many web upload forms, and a lot of non-Apple software, which is why converting to JPEG remains the practical default when you need to share, print, or upload a photo somewhere outside Apple's ecosystem.
JPEG, in exchange for the larger file size, is understood by essentially every device, platform, and piece of software made in the last 25 years. That universal support is the entire reason it's still the default target format for HEIC conversion, even though newer formats like HEIC and WebP are technically more efficient.
